It's no secret that in college and for several years later, I was the proud mom of a turtle named Noodle. As he grew, he became one of the cornerstones of my home and was always a welcome sight for visitors.
As I got more into painting, I knew I wanted to depict him in some way, and this was one of his favorite perches when he was tiny.
As I enjoy painting underwater scenes, I used this opportunity to experiment with depth underwater and the reflective qualities of sunlight on the surface of the water. I loved the experiment of working more with glazes and different layers to really create a dynamic image.
I used a lot of different techniques to create this painting ranging from gradient color change to glazes. I also did some color mixing directly on the canvas to really emphasize texture. I'm glad I got the chance to really bring out a scene that ranges from the bottom of the water through the surface.
